Karl Mann

ARC: Connections: Tributes: Karl Mann

On behalf of the Collegiate Chapters Council of the American Marketing Association, it is my sad duty to tell you of the unexpected passing of Karl Mann, Immediate Past President of the CCC. Karl passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2006, in Lebanon, Tennessee. He and his wife, Carolyn, were at Karl's doctor's office when Karl collapsed, apparently of a heart attack or stroke.

Many of you know Karl from his more than 25 years of service as a faculty advisor to AMA student chapters at a number of schools, the most recent of which was Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee. As some of you may remember, Karl's Tennessee Tech case team won the Dunkin'Donuts case competition in 2001. Karl was the president of the Collegiate Chapters Council of AMA in 2004-2005. He had recently been working with the AMA Headquarters staff on projects to enhance our presence on the AMA website.

Karl was one of those people that you could call a "character." He loved to be with people, and he really never met a stranger. He would strike up conversations with just about anyone, and he would, more often than not, get a laugh out of them. However, he was serious about the job of being an educator, and he held his students to high standards of achievement and behavior. Throughout his work with the Collegiate Chapters Council ran one consistent theme: What can we do to help make the AMA experience more valuable for students.

I think I can speak for all the members of the AMA headquarters staff and the members of the Collegiate Chapters Council in sending our condolences to Carolyn. Karl often said she was the best thing that had ever happened to him. We will all miss seeing her and Karl at our AMA events.

Visiting hours and a memorial service will be held this evening, February 3, 2006, from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Partlow Funeral Chapel, 602 S Cumberland Street, Lebanon TN. A visitation and funeral services will be held on Monday, February 6, 2006, at 10:00 am at the Lobban Funeral Home, 205 South Monroe Street, Alderson, West Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be given to the Marketing Club at Tennessee Tech University (through Hilda McDowell in the Economics, Finance and Marketing Office). Additionally, the family plans to create a scholarship in Dr. Mann's honor and those wishing to contribute to this endeavor should contact Pat Quillen in the College of Business Development Office. Edward G. Thomas President, Collegiate Chapters Council
