Career Coach - Leveraging Your Industry Knowledge Into a New Career
- I am a chiropractor by training and have a degree in psychology. However, I recently gained experience in the healthcare insurance industry as a supervisor of chiropractic consultants and discovered I’m far more interested in healthcare marketing than clinical practice. In this role, I had the opportunity to write promotional newsletters, give presentations to customers and perform many other ‘marketing-type’ activities. What do you feel is the best strategy to make myself an attractive candidate in the healthcare marketing field given my background?

Career Coach - Get Your Foot in the Marketing Door
- I graduated a year ago with a bachelor’s degree in marketing management and have yet to find a job in the marketing field. It seems recruiters will not give me an opportunity because of my lack of industry experience. While in college, I was unable to participate in any marketing internships due to financial complications and instead worked as an assistant manager for a small business. After graduation, I accepted a position as an assistant manager at a department store but I continued to apply for marketing jobs. How can I get into the marketing field with no related work experience?

Career Coach - Making a Career Comeback
- I left my job to move to Europe with my husband four years ago. We recently moved back to the United States, and I would like to get back into the workforce. However, we are now living in a completely different part of the country and I have no contacts here to help me with my job search. How does a person who has been out of the job market for so long find work?

Career Coach - Breaking the Mold
- I have been in the sales industry for eight years and have sold everything from apparel to insurance. However, I’ve always paid close attention to the marketing side of business and feel I would be a bigger asset to an organization in a marketing role. The problem is once a salesman, always a salesman. The only job offers I’ve received in the past four months have been in sales. I’m currently unemployed and have a large family to support, but am willing to accept an entry-level position – and pay cut – if it means I can do something I truly enjoy. Do you have any advice?

While marketing departments have long relied on consultants and contractors to handle a variety of tasks, the notion of using a staffing agency to hire interim marketers is only slowly catching on. Here are some interesting facts that we uncovered when surveying hiring managers about this:
- Managers in larger organization (500+ employees) tend to see the value in using staffing firms, with 73% saying they believe staffing firms can help them increase their capacity to get things done.
- People at large organizations, although not necessarily more likely to hire someone through a staffing agency, are more likely to use a staffing agency to find their next position. They are also more likely to do so if they are under the age of 35.
- In addition to the belief that interim marketers can bring a fresh, new perspective, as well provide needed relief to over-burdened permanent staff, respondents felt that interim marketers could “get up to speed” faster because they have experience doing so.
